Julia Gryboś and Barbora Zentková are represented at the festival with a project in which they employ the interplay of visual and sound information in order to induce a more intense experience of time and place. At the same time, this allows some of the most characteristic features of today’s society to stand out, especially the feeling of general exhaustion which slowly grows and gains strength across different social groups.
In order to achieve this, the artists choose one of the long-deserted houses in the centre of Ostrava where they stage a one-off music performance. In the performance four hired musicians repeatedly play and vary a motif inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s song Dancing in the Dark, and they do so until their rendering and the overall manner of performing start to show traces of fatigue, which finally turns into exhaustion (and with which the performance actually ends). The fatigue is also logically experienced by the viewers who have decided to spend their time there. Incidentally, the lyrics of the track also resonate with fatigue as the central motif; they were allegedly written in just one night under pressure from the recording company. The pop song is thus effectively used as a symbol of deranged modernization in which time is in the clutches of the principle of urgency and emergency, yet it also implies a revolt against these mechanisms.
However, the process does not end with the performance. The objects which served the musicians during the performance, steel stands bought from a clothes shop gone bankrupt which are also rooted in the morphology of functional furniture, are left as the reminders of the event. The physical and mental fatigue of the musicians and their audience now logically subsides but the motif of exhaustion remains, taken over, like a relay baton, by the space of the shop which can be only glimpsed from the outside, through the empty shop windows.
